NIDA - National Institute on Drug Abuse

NIDA's mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction.

This charge has two critical components. The first is the strategic support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines. The second is ensuring the rapid and effective dissemination and use of the results of that research to significantly improve prevention, treatment and policy as it relates to drug abuse and addiction.

For the past three decades, the National Institute on Drug Abuse - NIDA - has led the way in supporting research to prevent and treat drug abuse and addiction and mitigate the impact of their consequences, which include the spread of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

To confront the most pressing aspects of this complex disease and to tackle its underlying causes, our strategic approach is necessarily a multipronged one. It takes advantage of research programs in basic, clinical, and translational sciences.

This includes genetics, functional neuroimaging, social neuroscience, medication and behavioral therapies, prevention, and health services, including effectiveness and cost-effectiveness research. Our burgeoning portfolio has given us a large and growing body of knowledge that informs our strategic directions for the future.

These directions are grouped into four major goal areas, reflected in the sections that follow:

- Prevention
- Treatment
- HIV/AIDS
- Cross-cutting Priorities
